Wu Zhi Qiao @ Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture 2015 (10 Dec 2015)

Modern Rammed-earth Eco-dwelling Project supported by Wu Zhi Qiao has been presented at Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture 2015 (UABB 2015). Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology Wu Zhi Qiao team and overseas rammed-earth architects jointly created an exhibtion area with the theme of “Urban Earthworks”. A 1:1 scale mockup has been constructed to demonstrate modern rammed-earth architecture as an eco-friendly, aesthetic, comfortable alternative to sustainable architecture in future.

There are 86 works on UABB 2015 till 28 February 2016. During this period, we will organize volunteers from Hong Kong as helpers to study and work for our exhibition.

One more bridge was successfully built in Tongmu Village, Chongqing (21 Sept 2015)
The 4th project in the last summer was successfully completed in Tongmu Village, Chongqing. A 7-metre small scale footbridge was built for the locals so that they will not be afraid of the flood when go across the river to do the farming, go to the market or see doctor and it will save 2-3 hours detour for them. The students will not be affected by the bad weather when they go to school.

During Aug 22 to Aug 28, apart from the footbridge, the students from Sichuan University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Chu Hai College and other universities of Hong Kong and the Mainland also co-organized livelihood improvement programmes, such as doing the maintenance and decoration for the local school, helping to repair the windows for villagers. Moreover, the team designed calendars with public health message and distributed to villagers as gifts when they did home visits.

Wharf Xingguang Village Wu Zhi Qiao successfully completed (16 Sept 2015)
Wharf Xingguang Village Wu Zhi Qiao successfully completed! In the 3rd WZQ project in this summer from Aug 21 to Aug 29, student volunteers from WZQ teams such as CUHK, Tsinghua University, Chongqing University etc and the high school students organized by Project WeCan joined this trip. They jointly built a footbridge for the locals and helped to improve villagers’ livelihood by building and repairing water tanks. In the special educational programme, a student performed as “Super man” and played games with the local students, teaching knowledge of public health. We are honored to have Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK join the trip and he kindly donated bottles to the local students.

Macha village Centre Construction Trip 2015 successfully completed! (17 Aug 2015)
Last summer, we successfully mobilized volunteers to learn modern rammed earth technology during construction trip in Macha village centre. This year, the WZQ teams of Xi‘an University of Architecture and Technology and Hang Seng Management College jointly held the 2nd trip for volunteers to continue the construction from July 22 – Aug 2, working on the ecological corn wall, bamboo ceiling and maintenance on rammed earth wall. Our volunteers also conducted workshop and donated books for local students, doing home visits at the locals etc. Thank you everyone for your patience and passion on this project! You are the talented artists to make the village centre a reality!

A pavilion built for villagers | Wharf Qingling Village Community Enrichment Project – Phase III successfully accomplished (17 Aug 2015)
During 25 to 31 July 2015, 30 volunteers from Hong Kong and the Mainland jointly built a pavilion, an incinerator as well as the improvement works for a school e.g. playground facilities construction, toilet improvement etc. in Qingling village. Household visits and interactive session with more than 60 primary students were also conducted.

Come and Join Two Upcoming Projects in Chongqing! (24 June 2015)
1. Wharf Wu Zhi Qiao, Xingguang Village, Chongqing
In order to improve the living conditions of underprivileged rural villages in mainland China, CUHK WZQ Team co-operates with Tsinghua University and Chongqing University to carry out bridge construction and community improvement projects in Xingguang Village in Chongqing, including building footbridge and water tanks, renovating public facilities in the village and school, and promoting health education, etc.

This year, the WZQ teams of Hong Kong University (Student) and Chongqing University are going to launch the 3rd project there, including building a pavilion and conducting other small scale livelihood improvement projects such as school lavatory renovation, public health education workshop and home visit etc.

Invitation to Public Lecture: Waste Management in rural China (29 May 2015)
As one of WZQ yearly capacity building activities, a public lecture on waste management in rural China is going to be held on 26 June 2015. Two NGO workers from Sichuan and Guangzhou will share their experiences in waste management projects.

Upcoming Construction Trips in July-August (27 May 2015)
In order to improve the living conditions of underprivileged rural villages in mainland China, preparation for four bridge and community improvement projects is busily underway. WZQ student teams hope to solve problems such as river crossing and water scarcity by building footbridges and water tanks, renovating public facilities in villages and schools, promoting health education, etc.

Construction trips will be organized in July and August 2015. Details are as follows:

1. Qingling Village Community Enrichment Project – Phase III, Zhufo Township, Pengshui County, Chongqing
Construction period: 23-30 July
Key missions: on top of the two bridges built in the last two years, we are going to build a pavilion and other small scale livelihood improvement projects.

Happy 8th anniversary to Wu Zhi Qiao!

Special thanks to the generous support from Miss Ki, our Honorary Secretary, we are honored to invite supporters, councillors, committee members and volunteers to celebrate our 8th anniversary. With your staunch support over the past 8 years, we have mobilized more than 2,800 student volunteers from HK, the Mainland and overseas to complete 37 footbridges, 3 village centres (by the end of 2015), 2 village demonstration and a series of community enrichment projects.

Thank you everyone for your love and care! Let’s keep moving on.

Introduction to Volunteers’ Activities at Wu Zhi Qiao(17 Feb 2015)

The Foundation is in receipt of a letter providing comments on our volunteer organisation. In this regard, we have updated our FAQ session and please be invited to make a visit to learn more about our operation.

TWO more new bridges were completed in Chongqing! (11 Feb 2015)

Chaqi Wu Zhi Qiao, Chaqi, Dangzhi, Wanzhou, Chongqing

Between 19 and 28 January 2015, 38 volunteers completed the 35th Wu Zhi Qiao bridge – a gabion bridge with a span of 52.5m, the improvement works to a water supply system for 3 households and electrical installations in 4 households. The team also took and passed the family photographs to a number of households as well as conducted an interactive session on gabion bridges with 66 primary six students.

Due to the continuous high water levels, the project has spanned for 2.5 years since the first investigation. The organizing teams, Chongqing Jiaotong University and Chinese University of Hong Kong, have shown great patience and endurance in completing this difficult project.

Chow Tai Fook Wu Zhi Qiao, Xikou, Baojia, Pengshui, Chongqing

Between 24 January and 1 February 2015, 43 volunteers completed the 36th Wu Zhi Qiao bridge – a gabion bridge with a span of 28m, the improvement works to a school (playground hardening, installation of fluorescent tubes, fans and the associated electrical wires as well as a blackboard in four classrooms) and two clinics (replacement of desks, benches, cupboards, beds and stretchers as well as installation of a medical waste facility). Public health activities were also conducted with primary students during the pre-trip a week earlier.
As a recent record, the organizing teams – Xi’an Jiaotong University, Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong and Tongji University managed to complete the project within eight months since their first investigation trip in May 2014.
