In memory of Professor Sir James A. Mirrlees


Prof. Sir James A. Mirrlees, the Vice Chairman of Honorary Advisory Council of Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation, passed away peacefully in his home in Cambridge, UK on 29 August 2018. Wu Zhi Qiao wishes to express our most sincere condolence to his family.

Sir Mirrlees was a distinguished and highly respected economist. Wu Zhi Qiao has the absolute privilege to have him as the Vice Chairman of our Honorary Advisory Board since the inauguration of the Foundation. He has pledged his support to various Wu Zhi Qiao activities in person in early years.

Professor Sir James A. Mirrlees obtained his degree in Mathematics from the University of Edinburgh, and his PhD in Economics from Cambridge. He taught at a variety of world-renowned universities including Cambridge, Oxford, MIT and UC Berkeley, etc. Since 2002 he has been Distinguished Professor-at-Large at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and in 2009 he became Master of Morningside College in The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

He was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1996 for his fundamental contributions to the economic theory of incentives under asymmetric information. He was knighted for his contributions to economic science in 1997.
