Datan Community Centre at Datan Village, Zhangjia County, Tianshui City

Site Background – After building two Wu Zhi Qiao bridges in Datan Village, the Foundation wishes to build a village community centre there to impart modern building technology to the villagers and improve their medical and leisure facilities.

Project Summary – With dozens of villagers’ assistance, the construction of the key wall structure was successfully completed in Sept 2011. At the same time, the POLYU team has taken on the role of designing the interior of the Community Centre and the greening of the surroundings. In Apr 2012, a total of 35 volunteers comprising students recruited from University YMCA service groups and Community service group of Victoria Shanghai Acadmy conducted a service trip in the village to help with wall painting work for the Centre, paving work for the clinic and library, and some education programmes for local students. In July and August, with the implementation of “Wu Zhi Qiao Service Learning Programme” under the school programme “Project WeCan” sponsored by Wharf China Limited, two teams with close to hundred university and secondary students visited Datan Village to experience the culture and lives in the rural village, and conducted a series of liverlihood improvement programmes, including paving work, furniture fixing, eco-toilet construction and educational activities to local students.
