With the support of the Ministry of Housing Urban-Rural Development in P.R.C., Foundation has mobilized over 2,800 volunteers to complete more than 44 projects in Anhui, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Gansu, Guizhou, Yunnan and Chongqing, including footbridges, village facilities, village center etc., benefiting numerous villages and over 52,000 villagers since its inauguration in 2007. In 2015, the Foundation looks forward to developing more Wu Zhi Qiao projects in Yunnan, Chongqing, Gansu and Guizhou.
Since 2013, in an attempt to better utilize its resources and promote project sustainability, the Foundation has tried to concentrate its efforts in a state-level poverty stricken county. The Pengshui Miao and Tujia autonomous county in Chongqing was identified as many of villages in the area are still located in remote corners in the mountains and lives of villagers in the area is difficult. In this connection, site exploration was launched in the Pengshui County.
Amongst the 39 villages/townships, as of 1 February 2015, the Foundation has explored project opportunities in 34 of them. In identifying potential projects, the economic level of the beneficiaries was our prime consideration. Volunteers were required to visit the beneficiaries to understand their situation and needs. As a reference, in 2014, the Foundation is looking for areas with an annual per capita net income of RMB4500 (half of the average annual per capital net income of rural villagers in the mainland in the previous year).
It was noted that apart from footbridges, some of the area experienced serious water shortage problem and public health hazards. Our teams will further investigate and explore the possibility to launch related projects to improve local livelihood. The Foundation would assess whether the needs can be met by the Foundation and the WZQ teams before launching the project.
As of 1 February 2015, amongst other community projects, our teams have completed four footbridge projects (two in Zhufo Village, one in Puzi Village and one in Baojia) in the region. Three projects are in progress (third phase of the project in Zhufo Village, one in Lutang Village and one in Tonglou Village).
Site Background – This site is a major crossing for local
The Need – Currently, a tree trunk and two broken electricity poles are their major crossing. When the water level is high, villagers and school kids have to ride on a local truck passing by, or simply wade across the river.
Villagers Benefited – 1108 nos (about 180 students)
Project Highlights – The bridge design originates from the symbol of Islam — The crescent. Additionally, the project team will make use of local natural materials and integrate features of local region and environment in the bridge.
Project Team – Teacher and student team from Xian Jiaotong University (XJU) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (POLYU)
Close to 60 student volunteers mainly from POLYU and XJU accomplished the first batch of Wu Zhi Qiao in Xingshi Village in the Tongchuan City of Shaanxi, and Datan Village in the Tianshui City of Gansu.
The representatives from Datan Village and the University project teams presented and delivered their speeches in a completion ceremony on 17 July. Please click here for their full speeches (in Chinese version only).
A preliminary bridge model design was exhibited at the Wu Zhi Qiao Charity Gala Dinner on 25 Jan 2008.

Quotes by WZQers
The bridge bears love and message.
The love is as deep as the sea.
Those who gave their love had left their shadows.
For a ride of a thousand miles.
Poem from Datan villager, Mr Mao
"It has been days since we said goodbye to each other on the bridge and in the village. We miss you so much. I watched your departure and tears started falling out of my eyes. There was pain in our hearts. The kids cried. The villagers were really grateful for what you did. I could not express my feelings in words. Let me and all the villagers in Datan wish you, your family and your friends all the best in the name of Islam."
SMS from Datan villager
"You are like a candle who gives all its light and warmth to the students. You are like a fire who lights up the heart of the students. You are like a stone step who allows the next generation to climb up. Your good character and spirit enlighten the lives of others. Your generosity is as wide and high as the sky. Your love is as heavy as the mountain. We will always remember you and your students. With my sincere blessings, all the best!"
SMS from Datan villager

Mr Li, Head of Datan Village
He told a village kid that
"From now on, I am your relative in Hong Kong and you are my relatives in Datan Village."
