A New Wu Zhi Qiao was built in Maan Village, Xinan Township, Liangshan State, Sichuan (7 Oct 2009)
image075More than 40 professional, Girl Guides and student volunteers mainly from both Hong Kong and Mainland Universities built a 66 meters long footbridge in Maan Village, a quake-affected village in Sichuan, during the period from 30 Sep to 7 Oct. This bridge project is mainly organized by the Wu Zhi Qiao team from Chongqing University and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. It is fully supported by The Hong Kong Girl Guides Association and named as “Hong Kong Girl Guides Wu Zhi Qiao”. Please click here to see more project details.

WZQ bridge building programme in Liangshan State, Sichuan now open for recruitment! (10 Sep 2009)
image073Maan Village, a remote Dai village in Sichuan, was hit by 6.1 degree earthquake last year. However, it has been separated with very limited care and support from the outside world. In the village, there is a rushing river which is the biggest living barrier to the locals. Now, the Wu Zhi Qiao team from Chongqing University is planning a bridge building programme from 30 September 09 to 7 October 09, and they aspire to build a safe footbridge for them. They are now recruiting passionate team members from Hong Kong Universities. Can’t you miss it?

The first Wu Zhi Qiao in Guizhou (27 Aug 2009)
image071The project is organized by The University of Hong Kong and Chongqing University. It is the first Wu Zhi Qiao project in Guizhou Province. Since October 2007, the team members had started several site survey, on-site visits and planning in order to stabilise the old stone bridge and connect its broken edge for the locals in Xinchang Village, Ziyun County, Anshun City. Finally, the renovation work for the bridge was completed successfully in this summer. Please click here to see more project details.

A New Wu Zhi Qiao was built in Shaodi Village, Hezuo City, Gannan State, Gansu (10 Aug 2009)
image066More than 40 professional and student volunteers mainly both Hong Kong and Mainland Universities built a 30 meters long gabion bridge in Shaodi Village, Hezuo City, Gannan State, Gansu during the period from 2 Aug to 9 Aug. This bridge project is mainly organized by the Wu Zhi Qiao team from Xian University of Architecture and Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. A New Wu Zhi Qiao was built in Fangmaba Village, Zhaoyang District, Zhaotong City, Yunnan (14 Apr 2009)
image050More than 50 professional volunteers and students from both Hong Kong and Mainland Universities built a 50 meters long gabion bridge in Fangmaba Village, Zhaoyang District, Zhaotong City, Yunnan during the Easter holiday from 4 to 13 April. What’s more, all of them gained an invaluable once-in-a-lifetime volunteering experience during the trip. Sponsored by Goldman Sachs (Asia) L.L.C., this project is the first Wu Zhi Qiao project in Yunnan Province. In order to launch the construction work before raining season, Wu Zhi Qiao team from Chong Qing University had started site survey, on-site visit, project design and planning since August last year, and finally built the bridge together with volunteers from HKU, CUHK, HKUST and Chu Hai College during Easter. In addition to bridge building, volunteers could also take an opportunity to visit local village primary school and villages, and understand their livelihood through the visit. An Updates for the Xinan Village House Prototype Project in Sichuan (12 Feb 2009)
The village house prototype project in Maan Village, Xinan Township has gone on smoothly in the past few months and key buildings of the first prototype were completed before Chinese New Year. Media bodies from both the Mainland and Hong Kong, including CCTV, Phoenix TV and TVB, have reported this. Currently, nearly all earthquake affected families in our targeted village group (33 households in total – 95% of targets) wish to rebuild their home by using the building method they have learnt during the prototype construction process. In the coming months, the Foundation will subsidize key construction materials to them and empower them rebuild their home. Meanwhile, a well-illustrated and easily understood village house construction manual will be produced to maximize the demonstration impact of the village house prototype.

A Bridge of Hearts Exhibition (20 Jan 2009)
image039“A Bridge of Hearts Exhibition”, organized by the Project team in Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is being held at FJ Podium, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 19 January 2009 to 23 January 2009, from 10a.m. to 6 p.m. . There will be a photo exhibition and video sharing for two Wu Zhi Qiao bridge building projects accomplished by the Wu Zhi Qiao Teams from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Xian Jiaotong University and professional volunteer in Shaanxi and Gansu during summer last year. The bridge building process and memorable experience of the journey will be on show. Please come and join!

Comprehensive Rebuilding Project in Sichuan (7 Jan 2009)
image037In collaboration with the Ministry of Housing, Urban-Rural Development, the Foundation has launched a comprehensive rebuilding project in Maan Village, Xinan Township, Huili County, Liangshan State, Sichuan. Since mid Nov, our university project teams have conducted the first survey trip in the site and obtained survey data of the river and soil sampling. They will have further site investigation for accurate surveying in January this year. Meanwhile, they will liaise with locals for their bridge design concept and meet with local experienced builders. In addition, local villagers have been fully engaging in the construction work of the first village house prototype under the supervision of our project teams. Key structures will be completed before Chinese New Year.
